All Things New: Message Notes on Sardis
Only two kinds of churches in the world: alive or dead. Every reputation eventually meets reality.
Sardis was dead. Sardis died in its sleep - and only the one writing to her holds the power to reverse it. Jesus loves the dead church - and we see him here, as he did so often in the Gospels, coming on the scene to raise the dead.
I. Reputation - Rev 3:1
The One who sends the Spirit of Life - "He who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars" - reaches back to 1:4, the sevenfold Spirit in his fullness.
This is not a disappointed Christ writing. This is the Christ who holds resurrection life itself, writing to a congregation that has stopped breathing. He is himself the resurrection and the life (John 11:25) - that truth governs this whole letter before a word of critique is spoken.
Sardis - A City That Died in Its Sleep Once the capital of Lydia under Croesus - legendary wealth, the Pactolus river running gold dust down from the hills; likely the first place coined money was struck Its acropolis sat on a cliff considered unguardable - so sheer that no watch was ever posted there 546 BC: Cyrus the Great's forces scaled that exact "impregnable" cliff and took the city by surprise, while Sardis slept confident in her own defenses ~213 BC: The SAME city fell the SAME way a second time - Antiochus III's forces climbed the same unguarded height. A city that should have learned its lesson the first time didn't even post a guard the second. Sardis didn't fall to a superior army. She fell to her own unwatched confidence. Twice. She died in her sleep both times - and the letter to her church uses the exact same picture.
What Kills Churches?
Pride
Self-righteousness
Formalism
Deception
Division
False Teaching
Dated Approaches
Exclusive Posture and Language
STOP PREACHING (AND BEING ASTONISHED BY) THE GOSPEL
In the case of Sardis, living on past glory… imagining what was once vital needed no sustaining, no invigorating, no new and fresh encounter with God and his mercy.
II. Resurrection - Rev 3:2-3
The Diagnosis: "You have the name that you are alive, but you are dead" (v.1). All hat, no cowboy - reputation resting on top of an empty condition. "I have not found your works complete" (v.2) - not open scandal, not heresy - just loveless complacency that lived on past glory
This is the most dangerous kind of death because it never announces itself. Complacency doesn't feel like danger from the inside - it feels like safety. That false sense of security becomes its undoing.
Three marks of a dying church: Complacency (confidence with no watchfulness), Compromise (quiet accommodation nobody notices happening), Concealment (deadness hidden even from itself - a name that no longer matches the body wearing it)
The Cure - v.2-3 Five imperatives, stacked in a single breath: Wake up / Strengthen what remains / Remember / Keep it / Repent "If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour" (v.3).
Not the second coming but Christ’s coming in judgment to this church… a repeated word throughout the seven letters
Across church history, many people believed the coming of Christ was near. In a way, they weren’t wrong. He was coming. Indeed, he came. It wasn’t the final coming of Christ in ultimate judgment, but it was an apocalyptic visitation, a moment in which the Risen Savior came to visit his Church.
Do we want him to visit us in judgment or revival?
Direct echo of the city's own history - Sardis fell twice to an enemy that came exactly where no one was watching. Christ tells her: it will happen to you again, spiritually, unless you finally learn what your own walls should have taught you.
One of the greatest graces we’ve been given is that our Savior is the One who was dead but, behold, he is alive forevermore. If a congregation is dead, there’s no better head of that church than Jesus, the dead-raiser, the life-giver, the grace-robbing Savior who brought back Lazarus from the tomb and restored him to life and service and witness.
III. Reward - Rev 3:4-6
The Book and the Blood.
White garments - clean clothing in exchange for the soiled ones a compromised life leaves behind. A name never blotted out of the book of life - the answer to the anxious question of whether anyone will remember you when history moves on. Public confession before the Father and his angels - spoken by Christ himself, before the only court whose verdict finally matters.
Christ will confess you as his own on Judgment Day if you confess Christ here in your day. Matthew 10:30-33.
